Devon Rotary awards $9, 000 in Scholarships

To 10 Exceptional High School Graduates

 

(July 15, 2022 ) −   Devon Rotary Club, through its charitable trust,  recently awarded  scholarships with a total value of $9,000 to 10 graduating high school seniors, in recognition of their academic achievement, and  their service to their school and the community at large. 

Joining Devon Rotary in this effort were the Milford Arts Council and Shoreline Rotaract Club, which is a multi-town Rotary-affiliated organization for young professionals. Each of these organizations participated by awarding Individual $1,000 scholarships to two graduates.

The winners are selected by a committee of Devon Rotary foundation members. Scholarships were made possible thanks to donations from individual club members or other individuals, plus matches from the foundation

The honorees and their scholarships were:

From Jonathan Law High School:

Angela Kim Chu, daughter of Thomas Nulty and Agnes Chu, the $1,000 Paul Austin  Scholarship to be used to help Agnes major in forensic science at the University of New Haven. The scholarship is renewable, providing the recipient  continues to be enrolled as a full-time  student and maintains a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

 Luke Henricksen, son of Brian and Amy Henricksen Hanson, the one-time $1,000 Henry F. Scopp Sr. Memorial Scholarship, to be used to help Luke study finance at Florida Southern College.

Lindsay Konlian, daughter of Christopher and Stacy Konlian, the one-time  $1,000 Barbara Burwell Gaynor Memorial Scholarship to help Lindsay in her health sciences / pre-med studies at the University of Miami.

Aiden Morrissey, daughter of Sean and Elizabeth Morrissey, two $1,000 Milford Arts Council scholarships to help Aiden study mechanical or aerospace engineering at the University of Connecticut.

From Joseph A. Foran High School:

Mivette Garcia, daughter of Miguel and Evette Garcia, a one-time $1,000 John D. Gaynor Memorial Scholarship to help Mivette study entrepreneurship at Morgan State University in Maryland.

From Hopkins School

Chris Ruaño, son of Gualberto Ruaño and Ana Marie Gomes, a one-time $1,000 Bridge House Restaurant Scholarship to support Chris in his double major (government and economics) studies at Harvard.

From Amity Regional High School

Evan Jurzyk, son of Rick and Lisa Jurzyk, a one-time $1,000 William T. Dale Tools of the Trade Award, which he will use to purchase the tools and supplies he will need to pursue his career in plumbing .

From St. Joseph High School

Lindsay Capobianco, daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth Capobianco, a  one-time $2,000 James J. Maroney Sr. and John D. Malarkey Scholarship, to support her pursuit of an elementary education degree at Sacred Heart University.

 From Notre Dame High School, West Haven

Jack Weber, son of Rich and Leighton Weber, a one-time $1,000 Shoreline Rotaract Club Scholarship, which Jack will use to pursue a degree in health sciences at St. Michael’s College in Vermont and ultimately a career in physical therapy. While in Notre Dame, Jack was a member of the Interact Club, which is the high school version of Rotary.

“We are proud to be able to assist these young scholars in the furtherance of their academic pursuits,” said John Kuehnle, a former club president and current chair of the club’s scholarship committee. “We wish them well in the future.”

                               LIST OF SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED IN 2022 

Paul Austin Scholarship

This scholarship is a one-time $1000 scholarship. It is designated for a student graduating from any Milford High School or Milford resident attending any out-of-town High School who will be attending a 4-year college in the Fall. This scholarship is based on academics, service, need, and high school activities. It is renewable provided that the student maintains a 3.0 college GPA and is enrolled as a full-time student.

Bridgehouse Daniel & Roma Moger Scholarship

This is a one-time $1,000 scholarship. It is designated for a Milford High School senior who will be attending a 4-year college and majoring in Education. This scholarship is based on academics, service, need, and high school activities.

Bridgehouse Dodie Ireland Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Gloria “Dodie” Ireland, a past member of the Devon Rotary who was extremely devoted to youth, and especially to the students at Platt Tech. This $1,000 scholarship has been designated for a graduate of Platt Tech who will be continuing his or her education at an accredited post-graduate institution.

John D. Gaynor Memorial Scholarship

This is a $1,000 scholarship for any student graduating from a Milford high school or Milford resident graduating from any high school who is continuing their education at a 4-year college. This is designated for a student who will be pursuing a degree in business, with additional consideration given to students who are interested in entrepreneurship. This scholarship is based on service, academics, and need.

Barbara Burwell Gaynor Memorial Scholarship

This is a $1,000 scholarship for any student graduating from a Milford high school or any Milford student graduating from any high school who is continuing their education at a 4-year college. This is a designated for a student who will be pursuing a degree in education with the hopes of becoming a teacher. This scholarship is based on service, academics, and need.

Henry F. Scopp, SR. Memorial Scholarship

This is a $1,000 scholarship for any student graduating from a Milford high school or any Milford resident graduating from any high school. This is designated for a student majoring in Accounting, Finance, or Economics. This scholarship is based on service in promoting financial literacy, academics, and need.

The Milford Arts Council Scholarship

There are two $1,000 scholarships available. These are open to any student graduating from a Milford high school or any Milford resident graduating from any high school. These are designated for any student pursuing Art Education. This scholarship is based on service, academics, and need.

James J. Maroney Sr. and John D. Malarkey Sr. Memorial Scholarship

This is a one-time $2,000 scholarship for any student graduating from a Milford high school or any Milford resident graduating from any high school. Special preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree in education at a 4-year college. This scholarship is based on service, academics, and need. The award is made possible by a donation from the Maroney and Malarkey families.

CT Shoreline Rotaract Scholarship

This a one-time $1000 Scholarship Sponsor by the CT. Shoreline Rotaract Club. This is opened to any CT. Shoreline Graduating Interact Club member who embodies “Service Above Self”. The qualified candidate is a student who has a proven connection with their community and wants to continue to serve and volunteer during their college years and beyond. This scholarship is based on academics, service, and need.

Tools of the Trade Awards

The Devon Rotary Tools of the Trade Awards award was established in 1990 by then President William Dale Jr. to honor past club president and his father William T. Dale Sr. a plumber by trade. In recent years support from Excello Tool Engineering & Manufacturing Co., and Mark Krom of Harborview Electric Have also been added.

This one time $1000 award is designated for a Milford resident graduating from high school and going into the trade they studied or going to trade school to pursue a career in the trades.  This award is specific to a trade (see list) and is based on service, need, and a desire work in the trades. This award is made possible by donations from local businesses and individuals concerned about the trades.
